week 1:

For week one I used the drawing task to design a landscape for a set of tiles I'm painting on for the 180 self negotiated project . I decided that it was a good idea to use the drawing aspect to figure nice arrangements and decide what type of style I would go for on the real thing. I really liked the way these turned out and think this simple yet impactful design was a good way to base my tile design on. I love the contrast between the black and white a lot as it creates a lot more impact.
I also decided that I would do a few quick sketches from picture I took from inside an abandoned building. I did these as sort of rough sketches to see what they would look like if I used different mediums such as pen.
week 2:

For week 2 I wanted to revisit using alternative materials as I found that this was one of my favourite tasks to do. I found from this one of the materials that I like to use other than the convention pen or pencil was filler. I used a palette knife to achieve this effect that you see in all four of these pieces. Doing these A3 pieces inspired me to try doing a few of these again for the 180 self negotiated project as I thought it would be a much harder challenge to do them smaller and would look good presented with the rest of my work at an A4 size. Overall I really liked the outcome of all four of these pieces . I think using the black paper as a background created a good contrast. This made the pieces overall more bold and eye catching. I really like the look of the texture I manage to create as it add to that feeling of decay and the natural weathering of the building or object that has been left there to slowly decay overtime.
week 3:

For these pieces I wanted to try more continuous line drawings, for the first one I used A3 white paper as a background and simply used a black pen so that I couldn't be changing my lines after I had drawn then. This made my mark making more clean and certain but at the same time I was making sure I wasn't making the piece too serious as I wanted these to represent the unstructured and collapsing buildings. I wanted these pieces to suggest no fixed pattern and the idea of decay. They almost connote to the viewer that these buildings are unstable, uncertain and uncared about as they are just left to get worse and worse. I didnt like the blackground as much as the white but did like the textured effect of the oil pastels I used on .it

For this piece I screwed up a piece of A3 paper and then straightened it out as much as possible, I then used a black oil pastel to draw an outline of a light that I took pictures of from an abandoned motel . After this I decided to to use a yellow oil pastel to and some colour to the piece and then to finish it off. I then added a bit of a blue background. I overall really liked this piece as the scrunched up paper represents the unstable ground and walls that you expect inside an abandoned building.

week 4&5:

artist research:
These pieces I did with charcoal. I wanted to do a series of detailed close up drawings. I based my work of my photography of an abandoned glass factory in Doncaster. I really liked the way these turned out and I think this medium really suited the picture that I chose to replicate. I think the contrast between the darkest and the lightest areas really work and I especially like them all together as a series as it has more impact when they are all displayed together.

These three pieces are quick sketches are what I did as quick little plans for paintings that I wanted to make for the 180 self negotiated project. I ended up choosing to go with different ideas but enjoyed mapping out my ideas on different coloured backgrounds of paper as this helped me to plan my final exhibition pieces.
Jenna Gunnings:

Gunning's is a printmaker that specialises in lithography. I picked her as she uses a different technique that I have never seen before and think it really suits the subject matter of abandoned building. I love the overall effect that gives her work and makes it look more unique and distressed or aged, much like the state of an abandoned building itself.
Igor Nevskiy:

Marjan Teeuwen:

Seth Clark:

Sarah Batalka:

This piece is done by Igor Nevskiy. He did this drawing of an abandoned house that he saw. I really liked this drawing because you could see every little detail of this small house. I like the way that you can almost imagine yourself standing in this field yourself because he has created a real atmosphere with the way he has sketched the piece. This is overall the reason why I chose this artist and piece as you can really tell how charming, small and quaint this house used to be.
This artist is known for making sculptures within old houses, flats and other building. He mostly uses the found material from inside these buildings to create new structures and patterns. I picked this artists because I think its nice that she reuses and repurposes the building to be something nice to look at as otherwise it would be a waste of space. She gives the building a purpose again after not being used in a long time.
This is a mix media piece done by the artist Seth Clark. I picked this series by this artist as I liked the textured aspect of the piece and the fact that he uses multiple different layers and materials (much like I have experimented with mediums that create texture and layers like filler). I like the overall effect that his work created , especially through out this series that he did. I also really love the colour scheme he used to create a dark and eerie vibe/atmosphere.
This drawing was done by Sarah Batalka. I picked this piece because I liked the unique look it had to it. She captured the overall quirky qualities to the building perfectly. This drawing could almost be a photograph as lets us see the true view, as if we where standing there ourselves. I think her shading and mark making is what really makes this a good piece . I picked this because of the detail that she includes and her use of contrast with the black and white spaces.
What is drawing to me?
Drawing can be done in many forms, materials or on many different surfaces. It can be used to outline, plan or create detailed or not so detailed depictions of what you are trying to capture. There is almost no limitation on what could be considered drawing, even 3D work is a form of mark making.
